🌾 World Food Day 2025: Food is Health, and Health is Life

Konnichiwa, and warm greetings from Hattori Kogyo!                                        Previous Blogs & Updates

Every year on October 16, the world celebrates World Food Day, established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the
United Nations, to remind us that food is more than nourishment. It is the foundation of health, culture, and sustainability. On World Food Day 2025, Hattori Kogyo K.K. shares a message to value every meal and raise awareness of nutrition and food waste. As a Japanese manufacturer of professional kitchen equipment, we remain committed to supporting a sustainable food future through innovation.

🍚 Food That Feeds the World
Across continents, rice remains one of the most important staple foods, feeding more than half of the global population.
According to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Statista (2024):

• In Asia, average annual rice consumption ranges between 60–100 kg per person.
• In Africa, it ranges between 50–60 kg per person.
• In Latin America, it’s around 40–50 kg per person.
• The global average stands at approximately 50 kg per person per year.

Rice, wheat, maize, and other staple crops together account for over 40% of all calories consumed globally (FAO, The State of Food
Security and Nutrition in the World 2023
).

Each of these grains tells a story of adaptation, culture, and resilience from the rice terraces of Asia to the maize fields of the Americas.

🥗 Nutrition: The Real Wealth of Food
The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes that a balanced diet must include carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and
minerals
to support physical and mental well-being.

Each nutrient has a specific role:
Carbohydrates - energy source
Proteins - growth and tissue repair
Fats - energy storage and nutrient absorption
Vitamins & Minerals - immune support and metabolism regulation

However, it’s not only what we eat that matters. it’s also how we prepare it.
Studies by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health show that cooking methods such as steaming, boiling, and light sautéing help preserve essential nutrients better than deep-frying or overcooking.

The global focus is shifting from quantity to quality and promoting whole foods, fresh produce, and sustainable preparation
techniques that protect both health and the environment.

🌍 Sustainability and Gratitude
Food connects people, cultures, and ecosystems.
But according to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), nearly 1.3 billion tons of food and  about one-third of all
food produced — is wasted every year
.

At the same time, over 735 million people still face hunger globally (FAO, 2023 Report on Food Security).

This imbalance reminds us of our shared responsibility to use resources wisely - by reducing waste, supporting local agriculture, and being mindful of what ends up on our plates.

💬 A Message for World Food Day from Toshio Hattori (CEO & CHO, Hattori Kogyo K.K.)
"Food connects us all.
For 140 years, we’ve been crafting tools that bring smiles through every meal.
Happy World Food Day 🌏🍽️"
-Toshio Hattori (CEO & CHO, Hattori Kogyo K.K.)

Food is Health, and Health is Life.”
Eat mindfully. Cook with care. Share with gratitude.
Every meal is a chance to nourish not only ourselves but also the world around us.
